Striving to live a healthier lifestyle these days are difficult enough without having other health challenges, such as asthma. There are many ways that people with asthma can lose unhealthy weight, whether they are obese or just trying to live healthier. However, please consult with your doctor before trying any weight loss program and make sure you have the necessary asthma medications ready to use.

Here are some great suggestions to help people with asthma get started on their weight loss journey:

Weigh and Chart Progress Daily
First, if you have asthma, but want to lose weight, begin the process slow. Weigh yourself every day and write it down. Remember, your weight will naturally fluctuate day by day, but this will give you a sense of progress or the lack there of. The purpose of this technique is to gather feedback to see what is working, to keep you motivated, and on track.

Meal Planning
Second, tracking every meal is one of the best ways to lose weight whether you have asthma or not. Begin by using a calorie calculator online to determine how many calories you need to consume in order to maintain your current weight. Next, to lose at least a pound a week, you’ll need to cut whatever your total calorie intake per day is by 500 calories per day. Those calories less per day equals essentially one pound of fat. In addition, if you are already congested, make sure to remove all dairy products from your meal plan to reduce asthma flareups.

Snack Healthy
Third, like planning out your meals, people with asthma also need to plan their snacks. Keep healthy snacks with you during the day for those moments between meals when you need it. Healthy snacks can include fresh fruit, veggies, dried fruit, and lower fat yogurt.

Choose Low-Fat Alternatives
Fourth, people with asthma can still enjoy their favorite foods in moderation, but when trying to lose weight it is important to find lower-fat versions to replace your favorite foods with. For example, roast or bake chicken, cut and bake your own French fries, or use lower fat milk and yogurt.

Drink Water
Fifth, whether you have asthma or not, make sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day, but experts suggest to drink half your body weight if you can. So, if you weigh 130 pounds, you should drink at least 65 ounces of water per day.

• Running on a Treadmill

• Gymnastics
• Baseball
• Wrestling

Remember, this should be a slow process when living with asthma and trying to lose weight. It’s important to make a commitment to your weight loss goals, make a plan, and start to work toward your weight loss while keeping your health challenges in mind. Don’t rush this process or talk down to yourself. This process can be difficult for most people with or without asthma so just strive to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week and remember to track your progress. Good luck!
