Detoxification, sometimes called body cleansing, is a type of alternative medicine treatment which aims to rid the body of unspecified “toxins”. Toxins are accumulated substances that proponents claim have undesirable short-term or long-term effects on individual health. However, there is little evidence that detox diets eliminate toxins from our bodies.
Activities commonly associated with detoxification are:
Detox diets can involve consuming extremely limited sets of foods such as water or juice, eliminating certain foods such as fats from the diet, or eliminating processed foods and alleged irritants. Also, detox diets are often high in fiber which causes the body to burn accumulated stored fats and releasing fat-stored toxins into the blood.
Although a brief fast of a single day is unlikely to cause harm to your body, prolonged fasting can have dangerous health consequences or can even be fatal. Most medical professionals suggest that our bodies already have mechanisms in place to rid itself of toxins so a regular healthy diet that includes whole foods, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and veggies is best for the body.
