Diet for Breastfeeding Mothers

Mothers across the world have a choice whether to breastfeed their babies or not. When mothers choose to breastfeed, it is important for them to have a healthy diet. So, nutrients can be passed along to their babies.

Here are some diet recommendations that breastfeeding mothers should follow:

• Eat protein such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, nuts, and seeds 2 – 3 times per day

• Eat dark green and yellow veggies 3 servings per day

• Eat at least 2 servings of fruit per day

• Include whole grains such as whole wheat breads, pasta, cereal, and oatmeal in your daily diet

• Drink water to satisfy your thirst

• Breastfeeding requires extra calories so if you have lost all your baby weight, you may need to eat an extra 500 – 600 calories per day

Mothers who choose to breastfeed their babies have a lot of things to think about throughout this process. Make sure you are following these diet recommendations and check with your baby’s pediatrician as well to make sure your baby is healthy.
