Have you ever been determined to exercise, eat healthy foods, and follow the diet rules, but still found yourself not making any progress, and in some cases, experiencing weight gain? This process can be frustrating and depressing, but don’t give up. Begin to observe the weight loss principles you are following while on the specific diet that you have chosen. It could be that diet myths are causing weight gain instead of weight loss.

Myth #1 – Eat Healthy Foods, Calories Don’t Matter

• Pay close attention to calorie counts of all foods
• Track everything that you eat and drink including snacks
• Plan your meals ahead of time if you can

Myth #2 – You Can Lose 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks

• You need to eliminate 3,500 calories which is the amount stored in a pound of fat by eating less and moving more
• Crash diets are not healthy and most of the weight will return once you start eating normal foods
• Eliminate 500 calories (or cut 300 calories and burn 200 calories through exercise) every single day to lose about a pound per week

Myth #3 – If You Exercise, You Can Eat as Much as You Want

• Track everything that you eat and drink including snacks
• Plan to exercise daily and track your exercise as well
• Compare your food/exercise logs weekly and make necessary adjustments

Myth #4 – Better to Eat Mini Meals Rather than Eating Fewer, Larger Meals

• The calorie difference between eating mini meals vs. eating fewer, larger meals is so small that it really doesn’t matter
• Choose an eating plan that works for you and your lifestyle

Myth #5 – It’s Always Better to go with the Salad

• Watch the kind of salad toppings you choose, including salad dressings, cheese, nuts, and meats

So, the next time you get on the scale and notice weight gain instead of weight loss, evaluate your current diet rules. Don’t give up on your weight loss journey. Take time to make necessary adjustments until you start seeing weight loss, not weight gain.
