Did you know that more than 40% of adults don’t get enough of magnesium in their daily diet? Yet magnesium is responsible for major body functions, such as energy production, regulate blood sugar, conduct nerve impulses, muscle contraction and normal heart rhythm.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the daily recommendations for magnesium are:

• Adults 19-30 years: men 400mg & women 310mg
• Adults 31 years: men 420mg & women 320mg

Magnesium can be found in many different foods, such as:

• Dark Leafy Greens
• Quinoa
• Whole Grains
• Nuts
• Beans
• Fish
• Yogurt
• Tofu

However, magnesium supplements may cause negative side effects, such as:

• Upset Stomach
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Abdominal Cramping
• Being Overly Thirsty
• Loss of Appetite

Despite some of the negative side effects, remember, your heart, muscles and kidneys all need magnesium to work properly. However, magnesium supplements will not guarantee weight loss without a solid plan of healthy eating habits and regular exercise. Before you start taking these supplements, be sure to discuss the best form of magnesium and the proper dosage amount with your doctor.
